March 2012 – Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Dear Teacher,

The Once Film Worksheet published last month has been very popular – you can read the comments on this 48 page worksheet here: thank you all for the positive feedback! The film has now become a Broadway Musical, described by The New York Times as  “a love affair with music” – see http://oncemusical.com.

The first addition to this month’s Downloadable Worksheets section of the Teachers’ Area of www.tuneintoenglish.com is, appropriately, When Your Mind’s Made Up, performed by Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová and submitted by Mena Bianco from Naples.

The second addition also comes from Ireland, as March is when people all over the world (Irish and not!) celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, on the 17th. Whiskey In The Jar is renowned in both its traditional (The Dubliners) and rock (Thin Lizzy, covered by Metallica) versions. This worksheet was written by Maria Persico, Portici.

There have been three tragic losses in the music world in the last few weeks. The worksheet for Greatest Love Of All, focusing on superlatives was published on the site the day the sad news of Whitney Houston’s death was announced.

Davy Jones of The Monkees passed away on the final day of February – the worksheet for I’m A Believer, looking at the Past Simple, was one of the first worksheets to be published on Tune Into English.

Most readers of this newsletter will have been touched by last Thursday’s news of Lucio Dalla’s passing. One of Italy’s most popular singer-songwriters, L’Anno Che Verrà, from 1979, was one of the songs which helped me learn la bella lingua – Caterina Ziliani, based in Houston, Texas, has prepared a worksheet for this – you can see it on the Tune Into Italian page.

New Team Up in English, the ideal course for the Scuola Secondaria di I° Grado, published by ELI, is now available – click here for more details – you can also download the Culture page about St. Patrick’s Day at this link.

The Tune Into English Roadshow is continuing its tour, thank you to all those who have hosted the show, and to those who have sent in comments. You can see a large selection of videos and photographs from over five years of the Roadshow on the Tune facebook page.

The Karaoke page of Tune Into English features over 7,800 songs. Don’t forget that you can sing along with the UK Top 10 Charts on the Speak Up site – updated weekly; there is a link on the Tune Home page too. The Tune Into Ireland page also contains a link to Irish Karaoke, featuring a selection of songs in Gaeilge, for those of you interested in practicing the official language of the Emerald Isle.

Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig, a very Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Best wishes,

Fergal Kavanagh
