October 2010 – Imagine…

Share

Dear Teacher,

The Tune Into English Roadshow began its tour on the 30th of September to celebrate the Giornata delle Lingue – thank you to all in Grottaminarda for the wonderful reception the new show received – you can see the photos on the Tune Into English facebook page, as well as the article in Il Mattino newspaper. The tour’s Autumn schedule is filling up, and I would be delighted to visit your school.

The 9th of this month marks what would have been John Lennon’s 70th birthday, and two of this month’s additions to the Downloadable Worksheets section of the Teachers’ Area of www.tuneintoenglish.com are songs from the ex-Beatle.

The first, focussing on word formation, is Imagine. One of the greatest songs of all time, this worksheet was submitted by Mena Bianco from Naples.

Viviana Pettineo of Reggio Emilia contributed a worksheet for the beautiful song Woman, Lennon’s ode to his wife Yoko Ono, taken from his final studio album. This examines phonetics, imperatives and pronouns.

The third worksheet is a gap fill with rhyming words using Gary Go’s Wonderful. This was sent in by Laura Casolero, Grumo Nevano (NA).

Thank you to those teachers who have submitted worksheets, I look forward to receiving your contributions.

You can sing along with the UK Top 10 Charts on the Speak Up site – updated weekly, there is a link on the Tune Home page too. The Karaoke page of Tune Into English now features over 7,000 songs, including all those mentioned in this newsletter.

In September Tune Into Italian was presented in Ireland. The reaction at the two schools in Newcastle, Co. Down was extremely enthusiastic, and over 200 Italophiles came along to cantare the sound of il bel paese at Cork Culture Night. You can read more about this special musical lesson, teaching basic Italian through songs, by scrolling down the Roadshow menu of the site.

Finally, readers in the Avellino area are invited to Campania ELT’s opening party on Saturday 9th October. Your host will be Roy Boardman – many of you will be familiar with his work, including on the Tune site, appropriately this month, a worksheet for The BeatlesLucy In The Sky With Diamonds. The Tune Into English Roadshow will also be there, so come along from 6 to 8pm – there will of course be a Lennon song or two… Send an email to elt@boardman.it for further details.

I look forward to meeting you and your students in the coming months,

Best wishes,

Fergal Kavanagh
