June 2009 – Father & Friend

Share

Dear Teacher,

It is Father’s Day in most English speaking countries on the 21st June, and this month’s addition to the Downloadable Worksheets page of the Teachers’ Area of www.tuneintoenglish.com features four songs about the father/son relationship. Contributed by Maria Persico from Portici, the worksheet includes Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance, Cat StevensFather And Son (also covered by Boyzone), Alain Clark’s recent hit Father & Friend and U2’s Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own.

The Tune Into English Roadshow has almost finished its 2008-2009 tour, with one remaining date in Berlin (its German debut!) at the end of this month. Thank you to all who have hosted the Roadshow this academic year, I look forward to meeting you all again next year.

As the Roadshow has grown in popularity, its travel schedule has become rather hectic, and will need to be more effectively organised in the future – this year, for example, there were 14 shows in 8 schools in Udine on 5 separate visits. To guarantee the Roadshow in your school next year, it is now possible to pre-book – just reply to this email with details of your school, and the period of the year which would suit you best. Please note that any pre-bookings do not need to be confirmed until the new academic year, but your requests will allow me to prepare a more organised calendar.

The Tune Into English website is currently working on a new look – you can see a preview of what is to come in the June edition of Speak Up. The site will be restyled over the summer months, so if you have any suggestions as to how the site can be improved, we would love to hear from you.

The Karaoke page of the website continues to grow, with over 1,600 songs, including all those mentioned in this newsletter. This is an ideal resource for practising your English while having fun over the Summer break. Please note that youtube often removes links, so please let us know if any of the videos are offline.

Finally, thanks to the students of Scuola “Mauro” in Trieste for the wonderful drawings they sent – you can see them by following the link on the Tune Into English Roadshow for Kids page.

Enjoy the summer break!

Best wishes,

Fergal Kavanagh
